About Me:  Catherine Jarvis, Handy History Tour Guide & Teacher

Hello! Salve! I am Catherine and I would love to be your guide on your guided walks and tours in Northumberland, Tyneside, Cumbria and further afield. I am a qualified tour guide through The Institute of Tourist Guiding; a qualified language teacher (Durham University PGCE) and I have been leading guided walks since 2009. I also offer Latin courses and fresco painting courses with Cambridge Latin Project expert teacher, Verity Walden. I teach Minimus Latin to all age groups – from 5 years to 100 years old! I am DBS checked (which is updated every year).

I am a local person – born and bred in the North East of England on Tyneside (Jarrow & South Shields) and I have lived and travelled extensively abroad; experiencing the different cultures of Europe and Egypt. Since 2007 my family and myself live and work at Four Wynds in Greenhead, on Hadrian’s Wall, with a luxury glamping B&B business called Hadrians Holidays. For more information about our fabulous accommodation click here. With my husband, Nigel, and our two teenage children (plus friendly dog) we all adore living on the borders of Northumberland, Cumbria and Scotland for over 20 years. We have a passion for people, history and places!

Handy History and Hands-on-Latin (my sister site) were established in 2012 to allow me to lead guided walks and tours in the beautiful Hadrian’s Wall town and countryside area for 15 years+. I am very lucky to be on the Minimus Primary Latin Project Committee as a Committee Member since 2011 and I have had the pleasure to work with, since 2009, The Vindolanda Trust, Classics for All, English Heritage, The National Trust, Northumberland National Park and Epiacum Heritage. I have taught languages in a variety of local schools (all age groups – locally and abroad) and I worked with various universities (UK and Overseas). I have gained some hands-on archaeological digging expertise at Vindolanda and Arbeia (South Shields Roman Fort). I have enjoyed this very much. I have worked with the wonderful Lindsay Allason-Jones, OBE, well-known archaeologist and past president of The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne.

I am available as a freelance guide. I lead guided tours for Solos Tours, Mountain Goat Travel and many other tour operators – national and international. I speak English, Spanish, Italian, French plus the odd bit of Latin and Arabic. I am Outside First Aid trained. I can create bespoke tours.

In 2024, I am launching a new experience called ‘Write like a Roman’ based on the Vindolanda Roman Writing Tablets and the Roman Writing Tablets from all over Roman Britain. As part of the ‘Write like a Roman’ experience, I am in costume as a Roman lady. Find out more about this amazing experience here.

I love talking about history and about all the people who have lived and walked these lands. I am a natural storyteller and I love people so it is fantastic to be able to combine all of this in my guided tours, courses and experiences. I look forward to meeting you and showing you around this wonderful region on a Handy History Guided Tour.
